Hamaji
I am Louise Sommerlatte, the founder & designer behind the brand Hamaji. Hamaji, meaning Nomad in coastal swahili, captures the brand's essence of preserving ancient textile traditions & nomadic craftsmanship.
Each piece is born from the inspiration of my surroundings and the feelings evoked in everyday East African life, while paying homage to traditional craftsmanship rooted in Africa and India.
COLLECTION ORIGIN
A glimpse of our little studio, nestled under and aged fig tree in Kilifi, Kenya.
This is a sketch of the Kullu Wool Coat I dreamt up at the Kullvi whims studio in the Himalayas.
Our designs are composed of hand woven textiles from cotton, silk and wool, working with communites throughout Kenya and India.
With a focus on women empowerment in rural areas. Hamaji’s primary mission is to strive to support existing artisans in their traditional craft.
Co-creating with local artisans, we embellish the textiles through the art of hand beading, embroidery, natural dyeing and wood block printing.
